Cate Blanchett and her husband, Andrew Upton, are all smiles as they attend the opening night of Spring Awakening at Sydney Theatre on Tuesday (February 9) in Sydney, Australia.
The 40-year-old actress and her husband serve as artistic directors at Sydney Theatre!
Spring Awakening , a musical set in the late 19th century that depicts teenagers discovering their sexualities, took home eight Tony Awards in 2007.
“This work really requires people who have got enough perspective and distance on their adolescence, and enough maturity to be able to interpret it,” Cate told The Australian.
“Usually when Spring Awakening is performed it’s done by people in their late 20s,” she continued. “But we’ve deliberately sought — and found — younger people who are able to do it. Cate Blanchett keeps wraps around English actress Charlotte Rampling at the BAM Belle Reve Gala at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on Thursday (December 3) in New York City.
The 40-year-old Aussie actress worea grey satin and black lace fitted Giorgio Armani Prive cocktail dress.
Cate is currently starring in the play, A Streetcar Named Desire, at BAM. The NYDN writes, “The casting of Blanchett, one of the heads of STC, has made this show one of the hottest tickets in town. So it’s fitting that [her character] Blanche’s shattered face is the first and last image seen in this three-hour-plus show. Cate Blanchett spends some time with her 19-month-old son Ignatius Martin and a friend before heading to her play A Streetcar Named Desire on Wednesday (December 2) in Brooklyn, NY.
The 40-year-old actress and wife of playwright Andrew Upton currently plays Blanche DuBois in the new revival.
Cate, who was born in Australia, was excited to take part in the American play.
“It will be exhilarating to tour a classic American play,” Cate said. “As seen through our eyes, back to an American audience.”
Unfortunately, if you were planning on catching her performance, the entire 24-day run of Streetcar Named Desire is sold out.

Hands-on mom Cate Blanchett juggles her two sons — Dashiell John, who turns 8 on Thursday, and Roman Robert, 5 — as she shops at Babies ‘R’ Us in downtown Manhattan on Monday (November 30).

Cate Blanchett comes out to support fellow actress Kerry Washington at her new Broadway play Race at The Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Tuesday (November 24) in New York City.

The couple will be bringing the gentle Chekhov play Uncle Vanya to STC next season starring John Bell, Richard Roxburgh and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix trilogy). That’s why Cate and Hugo were BFF last weekend!
“Good Chekhov is like being at an amazing dinner party, and I’d want to sit at a table with all of those men,” Cate said of her co-stars.

Cate Blanchett returns home with her husband, director Andrew Upton, and their youngest son, Ignatius, 16 months, on Thursday (September 3) in Sydney, Australia.
Just yesterday, the 40-year-old Aussie actress was accidentally struck on the head with a prop radio thrown by her co-star Joel Edgerton during a performance of the play, A Streetcar Name Desire.
Sydney Theater Company general manager Rob Brookman said in a statement: “Cate Blanchett was accidentally struck on the head by a prop. She sustained a minor injury but felt fine soon afterwards. Unfortunately it was necessary to cancel the rest of that performance. Cate is fine and tonight’s performance will go ahead as planned.”
